ANTHEMIS carbon capture project reaches a new milestone
Antoing, 21 November 2024 – In the first half of 2025, Heidelberg Materials Benelux will submit a permit application for the early renewal of its current operating permit and the construction of a CO₂ capture unit at its clinker plant in Antoing. In this context, a prior information meeting was held on 21 November 2024.
The meeting gave Heidelberg Materials Antoing managers the opportunity to explain the clinker production process (the raw material used to make cement) to local residents, and also to present its ANTHEMIS carbon capture project. This information evening also gave the public the opportunity to share their observations and suggestions, or to propose alternatives that could be considered by the company.
ANTHEMIS, an essential project for achieving Wallonia's climate objectives
As part of the Walloon Region's decarbonization strategy and the European Union's climate objectives, Heidelberg Materials Benelux intends to develop a carbon capture unit at its clinker production site (raw material for cement production) in Antoing. This ambitious project aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by nearly 800,000 tons per year. During the first decade of operation, Heidelberg Materials Benelux will be able to provide its customers with 15 million tons of carbon-free cement. By establishing the foundations for long-term and sustainable competitiveness, the ANTHEMIS project plays a crucial role in the decarbonization of the cement sector and other industries with hard-to-abate CO₂ emissions.
Catalyst for a CO₂ value chain
To accelerate its decarbonization strategy through the implementation of a capture unit, Heidelberg Materials Benelux is prioritizing its Antoing site. Indeed, this site is already equipped with one of the most efficient kilns in the world in terms of the use of raw materials and alternative fuels, as well as energy consumption. While the ANTHEMIS project focuses on carbon capture, it is accompanied by collaborations with various partners for the transport (continental and maritime) and storage of CO₂ in the North Sea, off the coast of Norway. This initiative aims to create a complete value chain for CO₂ and is essential for the development of pipeline transport infrastructure in Western Europe.
Residents have the right to give their opinion
During the public inquiry held from November 22, 2024, to December 6, 2024, inclusive, anyone can send their observations and suggestions regarding the project in writing to the Colleges of the concerned municipalities, indicating their name and address:
