Heidelberg Materials intends to build a unique and innovative hybrid carbon capture unit at its Antoing plant. The so-called Anthemis project (standing for: Antoing Heidelberg Materials Emissions Integrated Solution).

From 2029, 800.000 tons of CO₂ will be captured every year. Heidelberg Materials Antoing will therefore produce clinker (the raw material used to manufacture cement) with a net-zero CO₂ footprint through carbon sequestration.

Thanks to Anthemis, Heidelberg Materials will be able to provide more than 15 million tons of net-zero CO₂ cement to the construction market during the first ten years of the project operation.

Climate change: we're part of the solution

To prevent global climate change, we need to reduce CO₂ emissions. CCS - Carbon Capture & Storage - is a strategic technology for decarbonizing sectors that inevitably emit large quantities of CO₂.

The Anthemis project is an essential contribution to Belgium's transition to net zero greenhouse gas emissions. It is perfectly in line with the carbon-neutral objectives that Europe wants to achieve by 2050.

CCS: an essential technology for the transition to net-zero emissions

The clinker plant in Antoing was the scene of an exceptional event bringing together three major players: Heidelberg Materials, Fluxys and Equinor. By creating a value chain for the capture, transport and sequestration of CO₂ (CCS), these companies are working together to put in place an innovative solution to one of the biggest challenges of our time: climate change. • Heidelberg Materials in Belgium teams up with Fluxys Belgium for CO₂ transport infrastructure project

The cement activity of Heidelberg Materials in Belgium aims to implement the Anthemis project in its Antoing cement plant to meet its carbon emission reduction targets. It is pleased to team up with Fluxys Belgium in order to create a CO₂ value chain. The partners have just signed an expression of interest underlining the cement company's willingness to have access to and use of the CO₂ transport backbone project proposed by the Belgian gas transport infrastructure operator.

CBR to build one-of-a-kind hybrid carbon capture unit at its Antoing cement plant

To support this capture project called “Anthemis”, CBR will seek national, regional and EU funding CBR, Belgian subsidiary of the Heidelberg Materials Group, intends to equip its Antoing plant with an innovative hybrid carbon capture unit. Antoing is a state-of-the-art cement plant with one of the world’s best-performing kilns in terms of specific CO₂ emissions, which was recently modernized and is ready to be used for the project with no further need for modification.
